Game Name
BECOMING BUTTERFLY…
Game Idea
Brief description of the game that includes what genre the game is, general idea of how it’s played, how the player progresses, and how long it takes. This is a role playing game in which the player takes on the role of a butterfly egg, facing the challenges and life experiences of each growth phase through metamorphosis as an emerging butterfly. The participant moves through the garden answering questions. Correctly answered questions allow them to move on, through the phases of the butterfly’s life.
Game Objects
What game object(s), or characters, are you using? What action(s) does it take? We are using a butterfly egg which transitions into caterpillars of the different sizes, instars, into a chrysalis, and then emerges as a butterfly. The player moves around the garden path. In order to move you must answer a question correctly. Questions are based on different information relating to information about a butterfly and its life. Questions are worth different points, which allow you to move that number of steps forward on the garden path. The path progresses to the different phases of the butterfly’s life cycle:
*
Egg;
*
5 Instars (caterpillar growths marked by skin shedding to allow for continued growth);
*
Chrysalis; and
*
Butterfly.
Sounds
Which sounds will you use for emphasis in the game? The following sounds will be used to emphasize the following actions in the game: Cheering sound when you:
*
Hatch from the egg;
*
Transition from each instar; and
*
Form chrysalis. Honking noise when answer is incorrect Clapping noise when answer is correct Siren when pesticides are encountered Fireworks sound and visual when butterfly emerges at conclusion of game. Questions and other written parts of the game will be spoken in the game for visually impaired students.
Controls
How is the player going to control the main character (object)? Through mouse movements, number pad, letters on the keyboard, etc? Explain how he or she will control the character through the chosen control. The player moves around the garden path. When they correctly answer a question, they will earn 1-3 steps ahead on the path. The up arrow key on the keyboard will be used to move ahead.
Game Flow
What is the game flow? Where does the character start? How does the character get to the next level? How does the game end? Below is a picture of the garden path the player will follow. There are steps in the path. The player will move forward by correctly answering questions. The game ends when the player’s butterfly emerges from the chrysalis!
Level(s)
How many levels will you expect the player to go through to reach the end of the game? What is the difficulty rating for each level (easiest to most difficult)? The questions will become increasingly difficult as you progress through the different life stages of the butterfly. Points are also earned along the way which may be used to protect your butterfly/caterpillar/chrysalis from predators and pesticides**. You can use these points to purchase all natural bio-organic pesticides for the garden so gardeners don’t use pesticides which will kill or harm you or your fellow butterflies.
